Interview with Rossanna

Rossanna has been really enjoying nursing for about 4 years. She did her training in the Philippines.
Rossanna originally wanted to be a medical technologist but took her nursing degree first so that she was assured of getting a job. Once she started nursing, she began to really enjoy it and she never looked back.
What qualities do you need to be a great nurse?
Rossanna: To be a good nurse you need a lot of compassion. You not only work with patients, you work with families. You have to be an advocate for everyone. You also have to be flexible. Sometimes we deal with selfishness or rudeness but we need to understand that the family is focused on the single situation of sickness, they are stressed, and they want all the attention. It is understandable. Nurses need patience and compassion.
What qualities allow a nurse to do this?
Rossanna: You must be a good listener. You have to be understanding of the big picture. You need compassion. You will be dealing with your own personal emotions and yet you must never forget that people depend on you. This is not only a profession, it is a vocation. The hardest thing is to work the long shifts, to have difficult patients or a sad outcome. The best part about being a nurse is being appreciated, being able to do what you wanted to do – making a patient comfortable.
Can you describe a particularly challenging or rewarding situation?
Rossanna: Neurology Ward, one patient was doing very well and then she began to do very poorly. The decision was made to withdraw all the intervention and she was mostly in my care and I had to reassure her and keep her comfortable – even just being there to listen to her. Effectively, she was waiting to die...but I feel proud that I made a really important contribution to her last days.
How did you find out about Carecor Health Services
Rossanna: I was introduced to Carecor by a peer. I found all the information about Carecor very encouraging. I never worked for an agency before and here I am.
What is good about Carecor is that it is a very organized agency and they look after the nurses. They called me and asked me how a shift went – they asked how I felt about the shift and did I need any help? I really appreciate that. They care for their staff and their salaries are very good.
