The COVID-19 epidemic is growing with nearly half the deaths linked to long-term care homes. One of the more recent identified areas of greatest need is personal support workers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). To help alleviate staffing problems, Carecor Health Services Ltd. (Carecor) is offering a unique opportunity to healthcare providers and nurses outside of Ontario to work in the province.

“We specialize in staffing acute care facilities with a variety of healthcare providers and nurses, but given the critical need in long term care facilities in our communities, we feel it’s our responsibility to step up and help,” says Jay Sahar, Carecor Director of Operations. “Given this, we are offering our current employees as well as front-line workers outside of the company the opportunity to join the fight against COVID-19 with our Carecor Toronto office.”

The Government of Canada has indicated that essential workers are exempt from travel restrictions between provinces and support between provinces is welcomed. “Having multiple branches throughout Canada, we are in a unique position to help lend a hand,” says Rachel Lavelle, Director of Client Services for the Carecor Halifax branch. “The PSW role in Ontario is the equivalent to Nova Scotia continuing care assistants and care team assistants, so it's a wonderful opportunity for Nova Scotia to help with the Canada wide COVID-19 response.”


Join the Fight in Ontario

Carecor is currently offering personal support workers, continuing care assistants, care team assistants, nursing students, and registered nurses the following to work in long-term care facilities in the GTA:

  • Guaranteed full time hours (40 hours a week) at a premium wage
  • Contract options of three, four, or six weeks
  • Placement in one long-term care facility
  • Guaranteed personal protective equipment (PPE)

For those who need to fly to Toronto, Carecor will be covering the cost of airfare and accommodations for the length of the assignment.


Staying Safe

Recently, a joint statement regarding COVID-19 and Health and Safety Measures, including Personal Protective Equipment was issued in Ontario by Chief Medical Officer of Health, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, and the Ontario Nurses’ Association. “The safety of our healthcare providers is of critical importance,” states Mr. Sahar. “We guarantee that personal protective equipment will be fully provided by the long-term care facilities we serve. If there is ever a concern with availability of PPE, we stand by our staff to refuse work and assure that they receive full pay for shifts missed due to lack of supplies.”

To set the employees up for success, Carecor will be performing orientation to long term care facilities which covers such matters as donning and doffing, hand hygiene, and self-screening protocol. Healthcare providers and nurses who take advantage of this opportunity will be supported by the Carecor Toronto branch to ensure they safely depart and return for this assignment to their homes.
